About
Fresh and dried figs are economically important products in Mediterranean countries but face significant challenges related to shelf life, quality deterioration, food safety, and waste generation. FIGURE addresses these challenges by converting fig waste into valuable biomolecules such as pectin, cellulose, natural colorants, and antimicrobial compounds for the production of sustainable biocoatings and packaging materials.
Objectives
The project focuses on:
- Recovery of biomolecules from fig waste and by-products.
- Development of smart and sustainable biocoatings.
- Reduction of postharvest losses.
- Waste management and circular bioeconomy strategies.
- Stakeholder training and knowledge transfer.
